4 Types of Hair Scissors and When Each One Is Worth Using

Most people own 1 pair of scissors and use them for everything. That works until it does not.

Blunt-cut scissors

Standard straight-blade scissors with a blade length of 5.5 to 6.5 inches are built for clean lines. On straight or slightly wavy hair, a single clean snip at the ends removes split ends without altering shape. These are the only type worth buying first if you are trimming at home every 8 to 10 weeks.

Thinning shears

Thinning shears have 1 serrated blade and remove bulk without shortening length. On hair with high density, 2 to 3 passes through the mid-shaft reduces volume by roughly 15 to 20 percent without visible lines. They are not useful on fine hair and can create frizz if used near the scalp.

Texturizing scissors

These have wider-spaced teeth than thinning shears and remove more hair per pass. On curly or wavy hair, 1 pass near the ends adds movement that blunt cuts flatten. The result is visible after the first wash when the hair settles naturally.

Offset handle scissors

Offset handles position the thumb lower than the fingers, reducing wrist strain during longer sessions. For someone doing a full self-trim in 25 to 35 minutes, the ergonomic difference is real after the 10-minute mark.

Buying all 4 types at once is unnecessary. Start with a quality 6-inch blunt-cut pair, then add thinning shears only if bulk is a consistent problem.
